Principal Adviser - Strategic Policy & Innovation
Are you an innovative, big picture thinker with experience in policy?
Do you want to help shape the future of our transport system, cities, and regions, and help New Zealand prepare for transformative transport technologies?
There has never been a more exciting time to work in the transport sector. New technologies such as electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned aircraft are rapidly evolving. We need housing developments, land-use planning, and transport to be more joined-up to create highly liveable places. Transport will play a leading role in meeting ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reductions targets. We also need to make travel safer and healthier, with new approaches to reduce the road toll.
The Ministry of Transport is the government’s chief policy adviser on transport. We are a small, collegial agency, working in a fast-paced environment. The Ministry has an important strategic leadership role. Our job is to ensure that our transport system supports a broad range of social economic, and environmental outcomes, and is positively shaping the cities and places we inhabit.
We are looking for a Principal Adviser to join our Strategic Policy and Innovation team. As a member of this team, you will contribute to an ambitious work programme to help us understand what New Zealand needs to do to prepare for transformative transport technologies, including autonomous vehicles and unmanned aircraft. You will also contribute to the development of high-level strategies for across the sector, to ensure that the transport system is delivering the best possible outcomes.
As a Principal Adviser at the Ministry, you will be responsible for providing thought leadership, overseeing the delivery of key work, supporting the overall capability of the team, and representing the Ministry across the transport and government sectors. You’ll also work collaboratively as part of our Principal Adviser cohort to accomplish shared goals.
We’re looking for someone with an aptitude for strategic thinking or systems thinking, with a proven track record of delivering high quality products at pace. You’ll be an experienced policy practitioner with strong analytical skills and the ability to write and communicate effectively. You will be comfortable working with ambiguity and will demonstrate a great attitude, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow your professional skills and experience. You will be skilled at working with and through others to deliver results, and establishing relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
