Senior Policy Advisers

Would you like to lead advice to Ministers and be involved in a variety of exciting projects? Be part of a vibrant and driven agency and play a role in shaping New Zealand’s transport system?

Transport is an essential part of life for every New Zealander. It allows us to access economic and social opportunities within New Zealand and across the globe. As the government’s chief policy adviser on transport, the policy issues the Ministry considers are growing in priority and complexity and we’re looking for talented people to help shape our transport system.

Being a smaller policy shop, the Ministry of Transport offers significant opportunity for developing broader policy experience across a large and significant programme of work. We are looking for Senior Policy Advisers and currently have vacancies in the following teams:

  • Resilience & Security: focuses on the resilience and security of the transport sector, minimising and managing the risks from natural and human-made hazards, anticipating and adapting to emerging threats, and recovering effectively from disruptive events.

  • Investment: over the next 10 years, around $45 billion will be spent on land transport investment. Our Investment team provides advice to Government to shape this expenditure. As transport investments have long lead times, high costs and leave long legacies, members of the Investment team think both about today’s transport challenges as well as those we will face well into the future.

  • Urban Development & Environment: leads advice on how transport can shape and support effective urban development, including having responsibility for the transport sector’s planning frameworks. Outcomes in Auckland and other major urban areas are a core focus. This team also leads the advice on transport-related environmental and climate change policy.

  • Rail & Freight (Auckland): provide advice on rail, and for multi-modal advice on freight, including continuing to grow our understanding of how the freight task is changing and the role of government in shaping and supporting this. With predicted growth in freight over the next 3 decades, an efficient rail freight network will play an important and complimentary role to road freight to maintain access to our key ports.

As a Senior Policy Adviser, you will shape the development and delivery of efficient, tailored policy research, analysis, and reporting in support of the Ministry’s goals. You will have the opportunity to both lead and contribute to our policy agendas, and exposure to senior leaders and stakeholders. You will thrive in a fast-paced and varied work environment, and enjoy working at all levels of the organisation. We’re looking for:

  • critical thinking and analytical skills to challenge the status quo and identify solutions.
  • strong organisational skill and the ability to pivot and work on multiple projects at any one time.
  • interest in coaching and developing Policy Advisers.
  • people who are energised by working with a wide range of stakeholders and partners, including working directly with Ministers and leading policy thinkers.
  • ability to engage and influence senior leaders and officials.
  • excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of diplomacy and political awareness.
  • experience of, and aptitude in, report writing for a range of potential audiences.

We have a strong focus on professional development, and you'll receive plenty of support to take ownership of your role.
