Our investment team within the Ministry of Transport is currently growing and we are looking for talent to join it in either Wellington or Auckland. 

Multiple permanent positions are available for Advisers.

We are the government’s principal adviser on transport policy, regulation and investment and play a crucial role in ensuring the transport system is working to improve the prosperity for New Zealanders.

The Investment team works across the sector to influence how funding is invested to ensure the transport system shapes highly liveable places, develops thriving regions whilst also ensuring the current system is transitioned to low/ zero emissions. 

You will get the opportunity to provide policy leadership, undertake complex analysis and develop innovative and practical policy solutions – with an eye on real world application such as programmes like the New Zealand Upgrade Programme (NZUP) and the development of the Government policy Statement 2024 (GPS24), which guides over $45 billion of transport investment. 

Some of the work you will get involved in is:

The team have a work programme with various opportunities including:

  • The development, monitoring and evaluation of the Government Policy Statement on land transport
  • Understanding and assessing major transport projects and programmes such as NZUP and ensuring the associated outcomes support thriving cities and regions.
  • Helping shape the strategy of transport investment in our cities in a way that integrates land use, urban development and emissions reduction
  • Providing leadership across the transport sector Crown Budget bids, including the Government’s Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF)
  • Helping develop the projects that form the transport component of the Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP). 

You will play a significant role in cross-agency priority initiatives. You will deliver reactive & strategic advice to key decision makers, will lead a range of regulatory processes – Bills, Rule changes, and amendments to regulations and develop new internal and external relationships with a range of stakeholders, as many of our projects require consultation. 

Te wāhi ki a koe | What you’ll bring

As an Adviser, you’ll join us from a background where you’ve gained solid experience in projects, problem-solving complex issues, and assessing options. Ideally you will have been working at an Adviser level for 2 years or more, but we are also happy talking to recent graduates who have both the interest and aptitude to work for us. 

Ideally you will have some experience providing professional advice in a government, legal, consulting or industry setting. Irrespective of your background, you will be regarded as a keen learner, someone who delivers exceptional outcomes, and demonstrate a great attitude and genuine desire to grow. Working in the investment space, means it is useful if you are comfortable working with numerical information. It is useful if you understand concepts such as cost/ benefit analysis, albeit if you haven’t had previous experience/ knowledge you are happy to learn.

You will be able to develop skills and capability around policy assessment and investment advice – for example an understanding of concepts such as cost benefit analysis etc. Most importantly, you will be part of a busy, collaborative team, with energetic policy minds and a proven track record of delivery.

The salary range for an Adviser role is $71,172 – $86,988, depending on experience.
