Policy Managers - Rail & Freight and Urban Development & Environment
Make a real contribution to New Zealand’s transport system
Lead, inspire, develop and build capability of the team
Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders
There’s never been a more exciting time to work for the transport sector. Transport is a critical part of daily life for all New Zealanders. As the government’s chief policy adviser on transport, our job is to ensure that our transport system supports a broad range of social, economic, and environmental outcomes, and is positively shaping the cities and places we inhabit.
We are looking for two managers to join the team. One manager to lead our Rail & Freight team and other to lead the Urban Development & Environment team.
Manager – Rail & Freight
The Rail and Freight team is responsible for leading advice on rail, freight and coastal shipping policies. The Government is fundamentally reviewing the role of rail in our transport system – making substantial investments and developing a sustainable funding system for rail. The team has a rich work programme considering strategic system level issues, developing legislative changes, and supporting implementation. You can work where public policy intersects with commercial business decision making to make a real difference for New Zealanders and support the delivery of a multi-modal transport system
Manager – Urban Development & Environment
The Urban Development & Environment team plays a crucial role in delivering the Government’s ambitions for cities through the Urban Growth Agenda. This involves integrating approaches to transport policy, legislation and investment with priorities for land use and growth. We achieve this both at the national policy level, as well as through spatial planning partnership work with stakeholders across New Zealand’s cities. We are also responsible for providing advice on an ambitious programme of key climate change policies to reduce emissions from the transport sector, including initiatives to encourage the uptake of low emission vehicles.
As a manager, you will have the opportunity to lead a team of policy professionals and shape the work programme. You will use your skills to lead, inspire, develop and build capability of the team. You will set the team’s strategy and drive delivery of high quality advice and results. You will be part of the Ministry’s leadership team and be responsible for leading, setting and aligning aspects of the Ministry's collective strategic policy work programme in-conjunction with other teams.
We’re looking for an experienced people manager with extensive policy development experience, proven success working across government and with Ministers, and with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
What we offer
There’s a lot of opportunity here. We’re a small, friendly agency, working in a fast-paced environment on significant programmes of work. We pride ourselves on maintaining a work culture that is collaborative, bold and invested. Working in our newly fitted waterfront offices further enhances our working environment.
The salary range for this role is $150,222 - $212,078.
