It’s a time of change at the Ministry of Transport.

Following in-depth consultation both internally  and with key transport partners we have landed a fresh new design and vision to help shape New Zealand’s future.  Transport impacts everyone and MoT is the policy engine room, advising how transport can better the lives of New Zealanders, whether that is enabling driverless cars, contributing to urban and regional development, or contributing to tourism earnings. We are looking to combine our key strengths with new talent to adapt to our environment that is complex and changing at pace!

To really get transport working the way New Zealanders need it to, we know that extensive collaboration will be the key – collaboration with our staff internally, and collaboration with our external transport partners. A small Ministry like ours gives you plenty of opportunity to gain experience and help shape the future.

There’s really no better time to join the Ministry, as we enter a whole new era of transport possibilities. From Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, to driverless cars and electric vehicles, the Ministry is at the forefront, enabling New Zealanders to enjoy new developments, and the environmental, economic and social benefits they bring.

It’s an exciting time for us, and you could be part of it. At the Ministry of Transport, you’ll make a real contribution to shaping how New Zealanders connect with each other and the world.

Policy Senior Advisers & Advisers

Permanent – Full time

It's not every day a role comes along that allows you to help shape New Zealand's future. But as a Senior Policy Adviser or a Policy Adviser, that's exactly what you'll have the opportunity to do.

  • Analyse and develop policy options, and play a role in shaping a vital system

  • Principal, Senior or Adviser level – bring your project management and strategy skills

  • Gain broad exposure across the sector and be supported to grow in your role

Can you lead projects and analyse information to move things forward? Then you can make a positive difference to every area of our society.

The Ministry of Transport is taking on a new direction - it’s not just about roads and rail. Transport affects every area of our society and we need to think in broad terms. In one of our policy roles, you’ll advise on how those policies can shape that vital transportation system as a whole.

As a Senior Policy Adviser, you’ll join us from a background where you’ve gained solid experience in leading and steering projects, problem-solving complex issues, and assessing options. You’ll be someone who can take all the information on an issue, analyse its facets, and decide on a direction. That experience doesn’t necessarily have to be in government, but the transport sector would be a bonus. Along with your analytical skills, you’ll be a strong collaborative team-player who can work with others and where possible can coach and mentor to build others’ capabilities.

As a Policy Adviser, you’ll take part in advising on transport issues. This includes responding professionally and comprehensively to requests from the public and the Minister. You’ll need to be able to write reports and enjoy doing so, but other than that the most important qualities you’ll bring are a great attitude, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow your professional skills and experience.

Whichever role you’re interested in, there’s a lot of opportunity here. The Ministry of Transport is a small, collegial agency that lends itself to day-to-day variety. You won’t be stuck in an isolated unit; it’s important that you gain exposure across the whole sector because of its significance everywhere, from health to economy to environment.

These are excellent roles for relationship-builders as you’ll work with the public, Ministers, and Crown entities, and engage with them all to consider the future. There’s a lot of emphasis on professional development, and you’ll receive plenty of support to take ownership of your role.

Join this energetic, motivated agency and make your contribution to New Zealand society, now and in the future.
