Portfolio Lead - Investment team

- Showcase your leadership by enhancing the Ministry’s portfolio-driven investment approach
- Join an organisation that values and proactively grows its people
The Ministry has a lead role in shaping New Zealand’s transport system to ensure decisions taken today deliver real and long lasting impacts for the lives of New Zealanders. We’re looking to help the sector plan better for long term challenges and are keen to deliver a stable policy environment with effective long-term signals.
To help with this, we’ve created a new 12 month fixed term position; Principal Adviser Portfolio Lead. As part of the wider Strategy & Investment group, this role sits within the Investment team and will work across the sector to ensure transport expenditure supports the creation of highly liveable cities and regions.
This is an exciting and broad opportunity if you are an innovative thinker and like to work collaboratively. The Portfolio lead will support the Ministry to develop a portfolio-type approach to lead, guide and assess transport investment choices. We see this as being about embedding the right systems, disciplines and practices into the way we work – which involves mixing policy and investment disciplines.
The portfolio approach will help the Ministry advise the Government on how to distribute its finite resources in a way that best achieves its desired outcomes. The approach needs to recognise that the future is uncertain and investment should adapt to changing transport trends and help to ensure that short-term policy decisions are consistent with and lead us towards achieving long-term investment outcomes.
To be successful in this role, you’ll have expert knowledge of portfolio analysis and supporting frameworks, tools, techniques and methodologies, in either the public or private sector. You will have an understanding of policy development and direct experience in this is highly desirable. Your leadership will inform, drive and challenge our thinking. Underpinning your success will be excellent communication and influencing skills helping you develop relationships with transport agencies, wider government and the sector .
The Ministry of Transport is a small, dynamic and exciting place to work. There’s a lot of opportunity here. You’ll gain exposure across the whole sector because of transport’s significance everywhere, from health outcomes to the economy and the environment.
